Why Ethernet?

If you don’t quite understand Ethernet and are looking to know a bit more, then no worries we can help!

Ethernet itself has a couple different wired computer networking technologies that are often used in Local area networks (LAN), Metropolitan area networks (MAN), also Wide area Networks (WAN). Ethernet allows communicating systems to separate a stream of data into smaller pieces which are called frames.

There are 3 types of Ethernet cables which are Coaxial, Twisted, and Fiber -optic cabling. It does get a little more complicated because they also have different levels of categories that fall into each type of cables.

The most popular one is CAT6  because it is the current top-of-the-line UTP (Unshielded twisted Pair) cabling. There is also CAT-5e which is more common for homes and it is more compatible with home’s wiring.

Pictured here are CAT6 cables connected to a patch panel.

The CAT5e cabling is typically used on MP3  servers ,PRVs, and mainly on audio devices that are used to play back internet radio stations or MP3 files located on a computer. It can also be used to connect the home theaters A/V unit to other rooms around your home. The CAT6 cable supports at least 6x the throughput of a regular CAT5 cable, but is a little pricier than the CAT5.

It definitely is up to your personal preference, whether you depend on the speed of your network or not, and how much you are wanting to spend.

We hope this information was helpful in anyway!

Thank you for reading and we look forward to hearing from you!
